Whatever China does it does it on a massive scale .
Currently the Three Gorges dam in Central China is the largest dam in the world generating about 100 Tera Watts or of electricity in a year....
Considering that 1 Terawatt is equal to 1000 Gigawatts or 1 Million Megawatts, the scale of the dam is massive....
But China does not stop with that ...in July 2025 it embarked on a project that is 3 times as big ....and in the most threatening of all places to us....in Tibet....
The Tibetan plateau is the source of Asia's largest rivers, the Yellow, Yangtze, Brahmaputra ( also known as Yarlung Tsangpo) and the Mekong....these rivers together supply 2 billion people downstream in China and India....
Tibet, being on the junction between the Indian and the Eurasian tectonic plates is seismically highly active and is earthquake prone....
This new project known as MOTUO MEGADAM project is being constructed on River Brahmaputra in Tibet....
This is estimated to cost China USD 168 billion and when complete, it alone would generate more Hydro power than the US generates yearly......and the project comes with huge risks for people downstream... .
China can bottle up the rivers water on the reservoirs created by this project in the lean season.....and would be capable of cutting off the supply of river water downstream....
When completed this project would dwarf all the other Hydel projects in the world and would have a capacity to produce 300 Terawatts of annual output....3 times that of 3 Gorges dam ...
This would make China control the water in the entire Himalayan belt not to mention damage that may occur due to earthquakes....and present a big danger to India.....Incidentally China has already constructed 98,000 dams and reservoirs across China including 40% of the World's largest dams thus far.....
In 2015 this region had a 7.8 magnitude quake ..the latest big one is the 7.1 magnitude quake in January 2025....
Also large scale projects involving land excavation, tunneling, making of reservoirs and water redirection have the potential to trigger earthquakes....
