WHAT IS LIFE-PART-1.

 

DEFINITION OF LIFE: All groups of living organisms share several key characteristics or functions: order, sensitivity or response to stimuli, reproduction, adaptation, growth and development, regulation, homeostasis, and energy processing. When viewed together, these characteristics serve to define life.

Life abounds on earth in many forms. But what is life? Firstly, the origin of life on earth is one of the greatest mysteries of science. Are we alone in the universe? May or may not be, but we cannot give a definitive answer to that question.

Logically we presume that since life evolved on earth due to certain conditions, it should also evolve on other planets orbiting other stars in the Universe where similar conditions are present. But till date we even do not know how life came about on earth.

The Stanley Miller experiment merely proves that amino acids evolved on the primordial earth, but it does not say how those amino acids combined to form the varieties of life around us. A lot has to be understood yet about life and unless that mystery is solved, we cannot say anything with certainty.  

The earth is about 4.5 billion years old. Scientists estimate that 200 million years after, that is about 4.3 billion years ago life evolved on earth. The oldest known fossils on the earth are however only 3.7 billion years old. That leaves a 600 million year window for which we do not have any information.

During this time it is possible that life may have evolved but has been repeatedly extinguished by catastrophic collisions with asteroids and comets. However, we have not found any evidence for that so far.

Life is supposed to have first begun in volcanically active hydrothermal environments on land and at sea. Some microorganisms thrive in the scalding highly acidic hot springs environments like those found today in Norway and Yellowstone in the USA. Therefore such organism may have formed on planets with similar environments in other parts of the Universe.

However, this is merely a hypothesis without any supporting proof. This is the problem with life, as we do not know how inanimate became animate; it becomes very difficult to say if it exists on other planets.   

What are in the ingredients for life on Earth?

It requires a steady energy source like the Sun, organic compounds and water. There are some elements that are crucial for life. They are Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, Nitrogen and Phosphorous.

Now a planet so close to the Sun cannot actually have Carbon and Nitrogen. Both the elements become solid only under very cold temperatures that are not present on Earth. Carbon is rare at the earth’s surface and chemically bonds more with iron than rock. So how did the Carbon found on the earth’s surface get there?

Water now covers about 70% of the Earth’s surface but how much of it was there 4 billion years ago for life to evolve?

How did life emerge on earth?

Scientists believe that life emerged from a Primordial soup. In 1952 as a University of Chicago graduate student Stanley Miller performed his famous experiment along with Harold Urey, a Nobel winner in Chemistry.

They injected Methane, Ammonia and water vapour into an enclosed glass container to simulate lightning. Amino acids the building blocks of Proteins soon formed in the container. They realized that this process would have created the way for formation of life.

Scientists now believe that earths early conditions had a different chemical makeup from the one used by Miller in their experiment. The experiment gave rise to a new scientific field named prebiotic or abiotic Chemistry.

Some scientists think that molecules for life may have been produced outside the earth and was brought to earth by meteorites or comets. In 1969 the Murchison meteorite that fell in Australia contained dozens of different amino acids.

In 2019, a team of researchers in France and Italy reported finding extra-terrestrial organic material preserved in the 3.3 billion old sediments of Barberton, South Africa. They suggested micro meteorites as the likely source. Further evidence came in 2022 from the samples of Asteroid Ryugu brought back by a Japanese mission. It had over 20 different amino acids.

Chirality means mirror image, non-superimposable molecules. An experiment in 1953 pointed out that without Chirality, large biological molecules like proteins would be unable to form structures that could be reproduced.    

But how can inanimate matter combine in a certain way to develop to be a composite organism in the first place, where each part becomes special for a particular job? It is very easy to say that some chemical reaction produced Amino acids as the Miller experiment has shown but, then how do those amino acids combine and formed the DNA, RNA and Proteins?

Is it not silly to say that they evolved? How did that happen? Again taking for granted that proteins and RNA and DNA have formed, how did they conveniently combine to make complex organisms?  

The problem here is that there are too many questions without any answers except if we exercise our sheer imagination which is not based on any proof.

The Soviet Biochemist A I Oparin has advance his theory for evolution of life. In it he says

1.     There is no fundamental difference between a living organism and lifeless matter. The complex combination of manifestations and properties characteristic of life must have arisen as a part of the process of the evolution of matter.

2.     Taking into account the then recent discovery of methane in the atmospheres of Jupiter and the other giant planets, Oparin suggested that the infant Earth had possessed a strongly reducing atmosphere, containing methane, ammonia, hydrogen and water vapor. In his opinion, these were the raw materials for the evolution of life.

3.     In Oparin's formulation, there were first only simple solutions of organic matter, the behaviour of which was governed by the properties of their component atoms and the arrangement of these atoms into a molecular structure.

Gradually though, he said, the resulting growth and increased complexity of molecules brought new properties into being and a new colloidal-chemical order developed as a successor to more simple relationships between and among organic chemicals. These newer properties were determined by the interactions of these more complex molecules.

4.     Oparin posited that this process brought biological orderliness into prominence. According to Oparin, competition, speed of cell growth, survival of the fittest, struggle for existence and, finally, natural selection determined the form of material organization characteristic of modern-day living things.

Even the simplest of unicellular organism has a complexity of structure and function that staggers the mind and is removed from the beginnings of life by a genealogy extending for millions and millions of years.

Pasteur’s unequivocal experiments have given us irrefutable proof that living organisms, no matter how simple they might be, cannot be generated from organic matter. Yet this might have happened in the millions and millions of years of evolution. It is impossible by any experiments to prove Biogenesis but looking to the life around us it looks like a reasonably consistent logical necessity.

The conditions on the earth in the last 2 billion years have undergone radical alterations and perhaps Biogenesis may not be possible in the current conditions. Even if it does evolve, the innumerable predatory organisms that exist on the earth would quickly destroy any such new organism.   

 

So, is life a new property of Organic matter acquired in the course of evolution or is it something that which resulted from the organization of organic matter?

There is every reason to believe that a certain period of earth’s history must have been completely sterile. Proteins containing Nucleic acids are the only constituents of the organisms which grow and reproduce by self-duplication or by replication. Neither viruses nor genes have the ability to duplicate or replicate themselves unless implanted in a cell or nucleus. So are these Nucleo proteins living or non-living?   

Till Louis Pasteur conducted his brilliant experiments which were published in 1862, most scientists believed that microorganisms automatically got generated from matter. Pasteur conclusively proved that in every case the growth of organism is due to contamination and there is no fresh generation of anything.

There are two fundamental theories based on the conception of continuity of life. 1. The theory of Cosmozoa along with the closely related theory of Panspermia and 2. Preyers theory of eternity of life.

Preyer starts from the empirical theory that all organisms are derived from similar other organisms, and questions “Is not the problem of the origin of life based on a wrong assumption that the living must have come sometime from the non-living?  “Why not consider the living to be in eternal existence like other inorganic matter?”

But if a living thing has only come from a living substance then that substance must have also existed at the time when earth was still a molten mass. Preyer insists that the living did exist in that molten mass. He says “If we rid ourselves of the idea wholly arbitrary and unsupported by facts that Protoplasm can exist only in its current composition, and of the old convenient prejudice that at first there was only inorganic substance, we can without fear take the next bold step, discard altogether all belief in a primary origin, and recognize the timelessness of the current of life. “

EINSTEINs GENERAL THEORY OF RELATIVITY.

 

Till Einstein arrived on the scene Newton’s theory of gravitation has been taken as Gospel truth. But Einstein had this habit of shocking us humans by propounding theories that went right over our heads. They cannot be rejected because he had provided mathematical proof for them but to accept them, our mind rebels. Yet, science that provides mathematical proof had to be accepted and we have no choice on that.

I have already written 3 short notes on Einstein’s Special Theory of Relativity propounded by him in 1905; the General Theory of Relativity is a later development that came about in 1915.

His General theory said there is no such thing as gravity and in the presence of bodies light curves itself. He said that this curvature of light appears to us as Gravity. He called that area where light curves in space as Space Time Continuum.

Okay, Einstein had his mathematical proof for the theory but there are not many who could understand his mathematical deduction at his time. So Einstein tried to explain this theory by giving real life examples, so that ordinary people could understand it.

Einstein said supposing you are sitting in a room all of whose doors are tightly closed. Suddenly the room is taken into space far from the earth and from any other body and then left there. Your room would then be falling (or better say moving) at a uniform speed. Suppose you leave an object in your hand, it merely stays there without hitting the ground because that too is travelling at the same speed. Then if you jump, you would find yourself floating in the air. That means there is nothing called up or down in that room now.

Now suppose the room had a rocket engine and you start the engine and accelerate the room, then the so called gravitational attraction comes back. Whichever side the engine is there, that side becomes the floor for all the objects in the room. The opposite side of the room that has the engine becomes the ceiling. If you then give the room the same acceleration as we have on earth due to gravity, then you would feel perfectly the same as on earth.

Now, the room does not have any gravity, yet by merely accelerating it equivalent to earth’s acceleration, we feel the same way as we feel on earth and have the same weight.

Now let us take the path of light in your travelling room. Suppose the room is dark and a small ray of light entered into the room from one side window. As the room is travelling, by the time the light reaches the opposite wall, the light also has to traverse some distance which would take some time. During that time, the room would have moved at least a fraction if it is travelling with ordinary speeds or much more if it is traveling near to the speed of light. That means, the ray of light that entered the room would not hit the opposite side of the room in a straight-line. But light always travels in a straight line, therefore in that room the curved line is the straight line.

In that room, the space has become curved, not just space but the space time continuum got curved. In the entire Universe the space time continuum is curved. In large bodies like the Sun and stars this curving of light can be clearly seen from the light received from other stars. Not only did Einstein merely state that, he calculated the curvature of light near the Sun and stated it is 1.75 seconds of arc. He challenged the scientists to measure and check his deduction.

But how to measure the curvature of light from the stars when the stars themselves are invisible when the sun shines? The Sun becomes dark during a solar eclipse and that is the time to measure the curvature. The scientists then waited for a full solar eclipse to occur and it finally came about in 1919. Scientists then travelled to West Africa and Brazil where there was a complete solar eclipse and indeed found that light curved as Einstein has propounded and has curved 1.63 seconds which is slightly less than Einstein’s mathematical deduction. Thus Einstein has become a mathematical prophet.

From this curvature, it automatically follows that around every large object light curves. This happens in the case of all the stars in the Universe. Collectively the enormous number of stars is making the space curve on itself. That is why the Universe is finite but boundless.

Okay thought some scientists, from this can we deduct the extent of the Universe? They thought light curves around every large body, so if they can calculate the mass of the Universe then they would know the extent of curvature.

The Astronomer Edwin Hubble of Mount Wilson laboratory observed the Heavens for some time and calculated the density of the universe to be 10-30 gms/cc. Using this value he calculated the radius of the Universe to be 3500 crore light years. Many scientists, however, expressed skepticism about the validity of this calculation on the extent of the Universe.

But nothing is final in science. Newton talked about Gravity but Einstein came in and made it redundant. That is why in science and specifically in Astronomy where there are too many imponderables, there is always scope for improvement, and new discoveries may displace the old ones again.

At the time Einstein propounded his theories we did not know that Universe is expanding and that came about later. Einstein made his calculations assuming a static universe and his deduction supported that.

When it was discovered that the Universe is expanding, some scientists have checked Einstein’s mathematical model and found a minor mistake that made him believe in a static universe. In turn after rectifying that mistake they found that the Universe can in fact never be static and has to go on expanding.

Again it was Edwin Hubble himself scanning the Universe through the Mt Wilson 100 inch telescope who discovered that the Universe is expanding. Galaxies are running away from each other. The farther the galaxy, the faster it would run away from us. Hubble analyzed through spectroscope the radiation from the galaxies and arrived at this result. 

Hubble then discovered a law for the proportionate recession of galaxies. This is called the “Hubble’s Law” and as per that if a galaxy “B” is twice as farther away from us than galaxy “A” then “B” would run away twice as faster from us than “A”. If it is 3 times as far then it would recede at 3 times the velocity.

But in this law comes a paradox. Suppose a galaxy that is 400 crore light years away is moving away from us at a speed of 110,000 Km/Sec, then as per Hubbles law as galaxy 1200 crore light years from us should recede at a speed of 3,30,000 Km/Sec or over the speed of light. Now as per our laws, no object can travel faster than light, so where lay the problem? The only answer we can currently give to that is we do not know.

METERORITE EVENTS IN RECORDED HISTORY.

 

The TUNGUSKA explosion occurred near the Tunguska River in Russia northwest of Lake Baikal on June 30 1908. Luckily, it was a sparsely populated area with only 3 reported deaths. However, it flattened 80 million trees over an area of 2150 Sq Mtrs.

This blast is attributed to a meteor air burst in the atmosphere of a stony meteoroid about 50-60 meters across. It approached Earth at a speed of 27 Km/Sec. No crater was found as the object was supposed to have deteriorated at an altitude of 5 to 10 Km instead of directly hitting the earth. This is the largest impact event in the Earth’s recorded history.

An explosion of this size could have destroyed a large metropolitan area.

In the more recent times on 15th February 2013, a 20-meter asteroid entered the earth at a velocity of 19 Km/Sec near CHELYABINSK in Russia. It weighed 12000-13000 tons. The meteor exploded in the air at a height of 30 Km. The atmosphere absorbed the bulk of the explosion's shock, creating a large shockwave equal to a 400-500 kiloton TNT blast, some 30 times the power of 30 Hiroshima bombs.               

This object approached the earth undetected before its atmospheric entry because its source direction was close to the sun. About 1500 people were injured as the shockwave hit 6 cities and damaged 7200 buildings.

Among these, the Chelyabinsk explosion was the most recent and mankind is very lucky that both in this case as well as the Tunguska event the meteors exploded in the atmosphere. Otherwise, a 12000 ton body hitting any area with a velocity of 19 Km/ Sec can cause a devastating impact.

These 2 events in recorded history clearly prove that such events are likely to happen again. We have to be particularly worried about Chelyabinsk-like events because the Chelyabinsk meteor approached the earth undetected as it came from the direction of the Sun. This is despite the NASA’s observations on NEO.  

A NEO (Near Earth Objects) Observations program had been launched by NASA and the EU in 1998 and is tracking the NEO’s. A NEO is by definition all those natural bodies that approach up to a distance of 1.3 AU (Astronomical Unit the distance from Sun to Earth 151 million KM).

If a NEO crosses the earth’s orbit and if it is larger than 140 meters, then it is considered a PHO (Potentially Hazardous Object). Most of the PHOs known are asteroids but a few are Comets.  

There are over 30500 known NEO Asteroids, and over 100 NEO Comets. NASA is continuously tracking these bodies.

విశ్వం యొక్క ఆవిర్భావం.

 

మన సూర్యుడు విశ్వంలో సగటు నక్షత్రం. మన పాల పుంత (మిల్కీ వే) గాలక్సీ లో సూర్యుని లాంటి ఒక లక్ష కోట్ల నక్షత్రాలు ఉన్నాయి. ఇది కేవలం సగటు గెలాక్సీ. తెలిసిన విశ్వంలో మళ్లీ 10,000 కోట్ల గెలాక్సీలు ఉన్నాయి.

మనకు తెలిసిన విశ్వం దాదాపు 1380 కోట్ల కాంతి సంవత్సరాల వ్యాసం కలిగి ఉంది. ఇంతకు మించి ఏమి ఉందో మనకు తెలియదు కాబట్టి మనము దానిని తెలిసిన అని ప్రిఫిక్స్ చేస్తున్నాము.

దాని తరువాత బహుశా మనకు తెలియని లక్షణాలతో విస్తారమైన ఖాళీ ప్రాంతం, ఆపై మరొక విశ్వం ఉండి ఉండవచ్చు. కానీ అది ఊహ మాత్రమే. నిజమో కాదో చెప్పటానికి మన దగ్గర ఉన్న జ్ఞానం కానీ పనిముట్లు కానీ చాలవు.

మన సైన్స్ మరో పది లక్షల సంవత్సరాలు అభివృద్ధి చెందినప్పటికీ (చుట్టూ అణు ఆయుధాలతో ఇది ప్రస్తుతం అసంభవంగా కనిపిస్తోంది) విశ్వవ్యాప్త రహస్యాలను మనం గ్రహించలేము.

తెలిసిన విశ్వం యొక్క మూలం ఏమిటి? విశ్వం ఏర్పడటానికి అత్యంత ఆమోదయోగ్యమైన వివరణగా చాలా మంది కాస్మోలజిస్టులు బిగ్ బ్యాంగ్ సిద్ధాంతాన్ని అంగీకరించారు. ఇది 1927లో బెల్జియన్ భౌతిక శాస్త్రవేత్త మరియు రోమన్ క్యాథలిక్ పూజారి Abbe Georges Lemaitre చే ప్రతిపాదించబడింది.

సిద్ధాంతం ప్రకారం విశ్వంలోని మొత్తం పదార్థం చాలా కాలం క్రితం ఒకే ద్రవ్యరాశిగా కేంద్రీకృతమై ఉంది. సమయంలో స్థలం లేదా సమయం లేదు మరియు ద్రవ్యరాశి వెలుపల ఏమి ఉందో మనం ఊహించలేము.

స్థలం మరియు సమయం సాపేక్ష భావనలు, విశ్వం మొత్తం ఒకే ద్రవ్యరాశిలో ఉన్నప్పుడు, వాటిని అస్సలు కొలవలేము. అప్పుడు స్థలం మరియు సమయం అనే మాటలకూ అర్ధం పోతుంది.

అటువంటి పెద్ద మొత్తంలో పదార్థం కలిసినపుడు అధిక గురుత్వాకర్షణ ఆకర్షణకు దారితీస్తుంది; అంత పదార్థం దాని కేంద్రం వైపు ఆకర్షించబడింది. భారీ గురుత్వాకర్షణ శక్తుల కారణంగా పదార్థ విస్తీర్ణం తగ్గిపోవడంతో అపారమైన వేడి ఉత్పన్నమైంది.

Primeval అణువు యొక్క గణాంకాలు మన మనస్సును కదిలించేవి. దాని నుండి ఒక ఘన సెంటీమీటర్ పదార్థం దాదాపు 100 మిలియన్ టన్నుల బరువు ఉంటుంది. పదార్థం  ఎప్పుడూ కుంచించుకుపోవడంతో వేడిగా, మరియు విస్తరిస్తున్నప్పుడు చల్లగా మారుతుంది.  

సాంద్రీకృత ఆదిమ పరమాణువులో పరమాణువులు కూడా ఉండవు, చివరకు  ప్రోటాన్లు మరియు ఎలక్ట్రాన్లు కూడా ఉండకుండా పదార్థం అంతా కుదించుపోయి ఉంటుంది. అందుచేత  ఉష్ణోగ్రతలు చాలా అపారంగా ఉండేవి. గురుత్వాకర్షణ వలన వచ్చే పదార్థ సంకోచమువలన దాని ఉష్ణోగ్రత అపారంగా పెరిగిపోయి చివరకు దాదాపు 100  బిలియన్ (అంటే 10 ,000  కోట్లు) డిగ్రీ వేడిని చేరుకుంటుంది. అంత వేడిలో పదార్థం కూడా స్థిరంగా ఉండలేక పేలిపోతుంది. దాన్నే ఖగోళ శాస్త్రజ్ఞులు "బిగ్ బాంగ్" అని పిలుస్తారు.

బిగ్ బ్యాంగ్ తర్వాత ఉష్ణోగ్రత 100 బిలియన్ డిగ్రీల కెల్విన్ సెకనులో వంద వంతు మాత్రం  ఉంటుంది. ఆదిమ స్థితిలో న్యూట్రాన్లు మాత్రమే మిగిలి ఉంటాయి. శాస్త్రవేత్తలు ప్రాథమిక పదార్థానికి న్యూట్రానియం అని పేరు పెట్టారు.

భారీ పేలుడు పదార్థాన్ని అన్ని దిశల్లోకి విసిరింది.  చిమ్మిన పదార్థం విస్తరణతో నెమ్మదిగా చల్లబడి అణువులు ఏర్పడ్డాయి. ఆ అణువులు ఒకదాన్ని ఒకటి ఆకర్షించుకుంటూ పదార్థంగా ఏర్పడి పెద్దది అవుతూ నక్షత్రాలుగాను, సౌర కుటుంబాలు గాను, గ్రహాలు గాను మారాయి.

14 బిలియన్ సంవత్సరాల క్రితం సంభవించినట్లు అంచనా వేయబడిన బిగ్ బ్యాంగ్ తర్వాత సుమారు 377,000 సంవత్సరాల తర్వాత మాత్రమే అణువులు ఏర్పడటం ప్రారంభించాయి. శాస్త్రవేత్తలు ఒక్క ద్రవ్యరాశి పేలిన సమయాన్ని కేవలం పేలుడు సంభావ్యతను తిరిగి అంచనా వేయడం ద్వారా మరియు ఇప్పటి నుండి తిరిగి వెనక్కు లెక్కించడం ద్వారా అంచనా వేశారు.

ఆదిమ పరమాణువు పేలుడుకు పరోక్ష రుజువు ఉంది. దానిని మైక్రోవేవ్ బ్యాక్గ్రౌండ్ రేడియేషన్ అంటారు. అమెరికన్ రేడియో ఖగోళ శాస్త్రవేత్తలు పెన్జియాస్ మరియు విల్సన్ 1964లో ఇంకొక పరిశోధన కోసం తమ రేడియో యాంటెన్నాను దిశలో తిప్పినా, నక్షత్రం లేదా గెలాక్సీ లేదా వస్తువుతో సంబంధం లేని రేడియేషన్ (తరువాత దానికి మైక్రోవేవ్ బ్యాక్గ్రౌండ్ రేడియేషన్ అని పేరు పెట్టబడింది) విశ్వంలోని అన్ని దిశలలో కనుగొన్నారు. ఆంటిన్నా ఎటు తిప్పినా  అదే తరంగదైర్ఘ్యం మరియు ఫ్రీక్వెన్సీ. ఇది విశ్వం అంతటా ఒక నిర్దిష్ట సజాతీయ ఉష్ణోగ్రతకు సంబంధించినది. ఇది శాస్త్రజ్ఞులచే బిగ్ బ్యాంగ్కు ఎక్స్ట్రాపోలేట్ చేయబడుతుంది.
