POLITICIANS IN INDIA-ARE THEY THE ONES WHO ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR CORRUPTION?

Most of the people blame the politicians in India for the corruption that blooms in India. But is that really true? Politicians do not drop down from heaven. They are not different from an ordinary person in any way and are but a reflection of the people themselves. They grow in a society and imbibe its values and certainly cannot have any better value system than the society from which they have evolved.

The problem here lies with the society and not with the politicians alone. 99% of the politician’s supporters do so because they assume that they will get a personal benefit if he/she gets elected. They do not even remotely think about serving the constituency or the state or the country. Amazingly enough, a person casting a vote expects the politicians to serve everyone but that very person if he happens to become a supporter at a later date would expect the politician to serve his interests. Not even 1% of the supporters would bother about serving the people. Therefore selfishness and not viewing the society as a whole is the root cause of corruption.

Unfortunately this is how our society functions today. Money is worshiped and the means by which it has been acquired does not matter to anyone. With such a value system how can anyone expect the politicians to be clean and serve the country? Are they yogis to sacrifice themselves for the people despite having all the power while some of the people (their supporters) enjoy all the benefits of that power?

It is the ethics of the society that has gone down and blaming some section is no good. Yes, the politicians have power in their hands and have misused it. So did the Government servants. But if they are to be corrected, the society has to first correct itself. Our society has accepted corruption. Unless corruption is viewed as a stigma and a sin by the society and roundly condemned it would continue to flourish and no one can uproot it. For example, the whole population of India knows that money is obtained by the registrars at the time of registration of land documents but our society does not condemn them. It is taken for granted that they have money and are respected. Many people cringe before politicians seeking their help despite calling them corrupt.

Corruption is something horrible that is eating into our society. But, it is our society that is corrupt as a whole and not the politicians alone. It is our way of thinking that has to be corrected first before corruption can be curtailed.

THE INDIAN SMALL FARMER-SHOULD THE COUNTRY LEAVE HIM TO HIS OWN DEVICES?

Agriculture had been the mainstay of the Indian economy at the time of Independence accounting for as much as 75% of the GDP. With development the share of agriculture has steadily come down to 19% at present. Despite this almost 60% of the Indian population is dependent on agriculture for employment. The development of agriculture would play a major role reducing the rural backwardness and lack of purchasing power.

The greatest problem agriculture in India faces, is the fragmentation of landholdings. The majority of the landholdings are small with an average size of some 3 acres. This is too small a size to be economically viable for a family of 4 people unless intensive and scientific cultivation techniques are adopted. This would require the farmers to be educated in farming techniques. But the small holdings do not generate any surplus for the small farmer to educate his offspring effectively and the drudgery continues generation after generation. Moreover, high level of farm mechanization is a must for better crop yields and the small farmer cannot even think of it.

Most of the time the small farmer is at the mercy of weather and he gambles every year by taking up farming. If the crop fails, he hardly has any money for investment in the next crop and has to borrow money from the moneylender at usurious rates of interest which he cannot repay. If the next crop too fails he has to borrow again and goes deeper and deeper into debt. This is a very sorry state of affairs indeed and no country can allow such an absurd scenario to continue.

One step can effectively address these problems and that is allowing companies to invest in agriculture and acquire farmlands. The companies can also lease lands from farmers on a long term basis and offer them a percentage of the profit earned on the lands. This would consolidate the landholdings and make them economically viable and more effective. The small farmer would be benefited substantially; the average agricultural income would grow higher and it would also enhance the National Income.

IS THERE INTELLIGENT LIFE ON OTHER PLANETS?

Apart from the earth is there any other place in the universe where life exists? The only conclusive answer we can give is we do not know.

There are 100 billion stars in the Milky Way galaxy and a substantial number of them would be having planetary systems. Again in them there would be planets having climatic conditions similar to the earth that can support life. That being so, again there would be intelligent life in some of those planets. If that is the case then at least some of those would be more intelligent and advanced than us and would be well versed with interplanetary travel.

All the research carried out till now has not been able to reveal existence of life on other planets. The Earth did not receive any travelers from interplanetary space till now. There are lots of reporting’s about UFO’s and other phenomena but none of them could be proved. At any rate if another civilization visits us they would be far advanced than us because they would have had to master travelling at or over the speed of light. They would be having weapons systems that are far superior to us and our weapons would be utterly helpless against them. If they ever come to earth they would certainly try to communicate with us and would not go around in UFO’s and hide from us. If we ourselves visit another planet with an intelligent life we would do the same.

No other civilization has communicated with us so far even through radio transmissions. Is it that no civilization in the universe has advanced enough to reach the speed of light? This appears highly improbable as some civilizations if they do exist would be far advanced than us and they should be able to certainly communicate with us.

That leaves out only two possible explanations:

1. Apart from earth no other planet in the universe has intelligent life and we are all alone in the universe.

OR

2. The speed of light barrier can never be approached or surpassed.

These are just the possibilities our logic leads to. It is probable that we are missing something in the equation with our human centric thinking and the future (if mankind survives for enough time that is) may reveal this missing link.
