Another big event for us, the Asian Games are fast approaching. They would be held at Nagoya in Japan from Sep 19th to Oct 4th.
The Nagoya games would have participation of
11,000 athletes from 45 nations and that is big. Asia accounts for 58% of the
world population and so a big proportion of the World population would be
represented at these games. In contrast the recently concluded Commonwealth
Games had only 2715 athletes but from 74 countries. However, of these 74, only
55 were sovereign states and 19 were other dependencies.
In the last Asian Games held at Guangzhou,
China, India did extremely well and won 28 Gold, 38 Silver & 40 Bronze with
a total of 106 medals and stood 4th on the Medal Tally after China,
Japan & South Korea. This is the highest ever medal tally at the Asian
games for India. India also sent a massive contingent of 655 athletes to those
games.
At the recently concluded Commonwealth Games
too India stood 4th on the medal tally with just 39 medals. Therefore
in most disciplines the Asian standards would be lower than the Commonwealth
standards.
Medal Count Total for the Asian Games 2022-Gold -Men 335,
Women-326.Total -661. India medals 107 is a strike rate of 16% total medal
wise.
Medal Count Total for the Commonwealth games
2026 the total number of medals was 674. India medals 39 is a strike rate of 6%
total medal wise.
That indicates, by Asian standards we are
better than for the Commonwealth games standard.

At the Commonwealth games we got medals only in
5 sports, while at the 2022 Asian Games we got medals in 22 sports.
The top 3 teams on the Medal table China, Japan
& South Korea are way ahead of us and it would be difficult for us to
approach even South Korea. Uzbekistan was in the 5th place at our
heels and got 22 Gold. If we can preserve our 4 th place we got last time, we
can be happy.
India is sending a contingent of 503 athletes
for the games. I prepared a list of 492 which was initially announced while 10
more athletes, 6 in Athletics & 4 in Surfing were added later and 1 more in
some other sport whose detail I could not get. In the side column I gave the
medals won in 2022 in those disciplines against respective squads for this time.

We are sending a good number of athletes in
these disciplines and are bound to do well this time too.
In the following sports where we did not win a
single medal last time we are sending big contingents in 2026.

Hopefully we would pick up some medals in these

More women than men are in the Indian team. Surprised
to see the women’s team participating in Rugby this time. No men’s team there.
